Interior Design Basics

Many people want to update the look of their space but are unsure of where to start. Thinking of colors alone to decorate an area can sometimes be a daunting task for some people.

If you

have recently acquired a new Condo unit and you want to maximize the small space;

in the process of renovating a house;

are an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) abroad that bought a bare unit here in the Philippines as investment (AirBnB) in preparation for retirement  or

just planning an entirely new residential or commercial project,

Then this article can give you some ideas that may help you achieve your goal. Read on.

Let’s start with the basics

Consider a REALISTIC view of how you live and how you or your family will use the house. How many are going to live or stay there, Is it just a weekend house, How often do you invite family, friends, and guests over, Do you have pets, and are they allowed to sleep with you in your room, etc. Once you have those all sorted out, you can then move on to the next step.

Check your Budget and determine how much you are willing to spend. Your budget will actually define your choices as you move forward with your project.

Think about the ambiance that you want the room to feel. As Stephen Covey puts it, “Begin with the end in mind”. This also holds true when it comes to Interior Design.

The amount of light in your area plays a crucial role in the effect you wish to achieve. You can establish an atmosphere through the lighting options you choose. Center, cove, and wall-mounted lights are airier and would work well in living or dining rooms while spot lighting can be a little more practical in kitchens and bathrooms but may be harsher in other rooms when done incorrectly. Table and floor lamps are ideally to be used with low-voltage bulbs so they don’t overpower. Not to mention it would also be cheaper and more cost-efficient.

Arrange your Furniture / Fixtures with the correct passage flow in mind.  A well-designed area is not supposed to restrict the flow of traffic even if there are guests present.

Choose your color combinations wisely. It is not true that just by painting a room white, it would instantly appear bigger. This is a common misconception when working on small space projects, along with the idea that there should be less or almost no more furniture. A carefully chosen color palette with appropriate accents or accessories and well-placed furnishings can expand a space more than you can imagine. You just have to get into the habit of organizing.
